Introduction: Embracing Minimalism in Travel
Pictured above is everything in my possession, with 5 months left to go. It’s been 28 days since my journey began, and I’ve quickly realized I packed too much. Overpacking can stem from overthinking and trying to anticipate too much. Here’s how I streamlined my belongings for a more manageable and enjoyable trip.
The Items I Shed: Lightening the Load
I started by identifying and eliminating items that were either too bulky or unnecessary. Here’s a short list of what I’ve gotten rid of:
- Two pairs of blue jeans: weight and bulk
- Power converter: didn’t need
- Guide books: weight
- One button-up dress shirt: weight and size
- Packing cubes: size and bulk
- Original backpack: too bulky
- Fit watch: didn’t need
- Four plug adapters
Current Essentials: What I Travel With Now
After some careful consideration, I’ve narrowed down my belongings to the essentials that I truly need:
Clothing
- One pair of camping/hiking pants (convertible to shorts)
- One pair of blue jeans
- One belt
- Three t-shirts
- One pair of shorts
- Five button-up shirts
- One pair of gym shoes
- Five pairs of underwear
- Five pairs of socks
Accessories and Gear
- Blood pressure machine
- Two plug adapters, one plug-in charger
- Magic stuff: cards, coins, mat, a few props, and gimmicks
- One laptop
- One Kindle
- One phone with charging cords
- Hearing aids and cleaner
- Beats earplugs with mouthpiece
- Medicine
- Camera, extra lens, charger, and battery
- Two pairs of reading glasses
- Two pairs of regular glasses
- One pair of sunglasses
- Floppy hat
- Sunscreen
- Nail clipper
- Money belt
- Wallet
- Folder of printed-out tickets
- One notebook
Unused Items: Still Carrying Too Much
Even with my streamlined packing, I still have a few items I’ve yet to use:
- Windbreaker
- Rain jacket
- Two pairs of casual pants
Conclusion: Aiming for Ultimate Minimalism
This is what I have for a 5-month trip, and I still think I have too much stuff. My goal is to get down to a small duffle bag before heading to India. Until next time, enjoy life’s journey.
Wow, you are really getting down to bear minimum. I thought when you left a month ago you were down to very minimal packing.
